On July 11, Jeong Chelwon, the governor of Damyang County in South Jeolla Province, marked his 100th day in office by announcing the achievements of his administration and outlining future plans. Governor Jeong is steadily implementing a variety of projects aimed at normalizing county administration and improving the quality of life for residents.
One of the most significant achievements is the signing of a rural agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Under this agreement, a total of 36.9 billion KRW will be invested by 2029 to gradually improve the region's residential infrastructure. Through this initiative, the county aims to increase the self-sufficiency rate of essential services such as childcare, healthcare, and transportation, and to promote balanced regional development.
In the agricultural sector, Damyang rice has succeeded in being exported to France for the second consecutive year, with contracts for 200 tons signed just this year. The county is supporting logistics costs and expects export revenues of 4.6 billion KRW. Communication with young farmers is also being strengthened, and efforts are being made to support their settlement in agriculture.
In the field of welfare, the "Silver Meal Center" has opened, providing meal delivery services to approximately 350 elderly residents with limited mobility, and serving as a hub for the community care system.
In terms of resident population, Damyang County has ranked first among population-declining areas in South Jeolla Province for three consecutive quarters. The average daily population is 398,000, which is 7.7 times higher than the registered population. To convert this into an increase in the resident population, the county is investing 26.9 billion KRW from the Local Extinction Response Fund and 21.1 billion KRW in population policy budgets.
The county is also actively working to secure national funding. Last month, Governor Jeong visited the National Assembly to request a total of 10 billion KRW in special grant tax support. The county is also pursuing the improvement of aging infrastructure and the expansion of tourism infrastructure.
In particular, through the "Conversations with Residents in Villages" initiative, Governor Jeong has personally visited 325 villages to listen to on-site civil complaints and take immediate action, thereby strengthening communication with residents.
Governor Jeong stated, "Over the past 100 days, I have focused on placing the 'voice of the residents' at the center of county administration by listening to and acting directly alongside the people." He added, "We will steadily prepare for the future of Damyang with policies that residents can truly feel."
