Daytime Highs Reach 36 Degrees This Weekend... "Heatwave Continues"

Through this weekend, the western side of the Taebaek Mountains will continue to experience a heatwave, with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 36 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures are expected to drop somewhat starting next week.

Daytime Highs Reach 36 Degrees This Weekend... "Heatwave Continues" Yonhap News

On July 12 and 13, the morning lows are expected to be between 19 and 25 degrees Celsius, and the daytime highs are forecast to be between 27 and 36 degrees Celsius and 28 and 35 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The forecasted minimum and maximum temperatures for major cities on July 12 are as follows: Seoul, 24 and 36 degrees; Incheon and Daejeon, 23 and 34 degrees; Gwangju, 25 and 34 degrees; Daegu, 23 and 31 degrees; Ulsan, 23 and 30 degrees; and Busan, 24 and 31 degrees.

Due to strong sunlight, ozone concentrations are expected to reach the 'bad' level in the Seoul metropolitan area, western Gangwon, North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, North Jeolla, and South Jeolla on July 12, and in the Seoul metropolitan area, Gangwon region, Chungcheong region, and North Jeolla on July 13.

After July 12, the pressure system currently causing the heatwave is expected to weaken.

As the double high-pressure system of the Tibetan High and the North Pacific High that has been covering the Korean Peninsula dissipates, the intensity of the heat is also expected to subside somewhat.

On Monday, July 14, the morning low will be between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius, and the daytime high will be between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius. While these temperatures still exceed the seasonal averages (morning lows of 20 to 22 degrees and highs of 26 to 30 degrees), they will be noticeably lower than this week.

However, as westerly winds carry moisture from the edge of a high-pressure system located south of Jeju, the perceived temperature is expected to remain high.

Jeju is forecast to receive 10 to 60 millimeters of rain, and possibly more than 80 millimeters (excluding the western, northern, and northern mid-mountain areas) through July 13. This is due to a trough moving through the southern seas.

For the same reason, South Jeolla is expected to see rain starting early morning on July 13, and southern North Jeolla and South Gyeongsang will see rain from the morning of the same day. Precipitation amounts are expected to be 5 to 50 millimeters (5 to 20 millimeters for southern North Jeolla).

Through July 12, Jeju may experience gusts exceeding 70 kilometers per hour (20 meters per second), while the Chungcheong region and southern areas may see gusts around 55 kilometers per hour (15 meters per second).

At sea, through July 12, areas under high wave advisories?including the waters around Jeju, the far southern part of the South Sea, and the far southern part of the southern West Sea?will experience winds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour (9 to 16 meters per second) and waves reaching heights of 1.5 to 3.5 meters.
