Private High School Teacher in Mokpo Caught Copying Exam Questions from Reference Book

It has been revealed that some questions on the final exams at a high school in Mokpo, Jeonnam were copied from reference books published by domestic publishers.

On July 11, Yonhap News reported, "The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education has received an objection regarding the final exam questions at a private high school in Mokpo and is currently conducting an investigation together with the school." The objection was filed on the grounds that the physics exam questions for second-year students, held earlier this month, were identical to those found in a publisher's reference book.

According to the first investigation by the Office of Education, out of 24 multiple-choice questions on the exam, 6 questions and their answers were almost identical to those in the reference book. Many of the remaining questions were also found to be similar to the contents of the same reference book.

It was also revealed that the questions on this year's midterm exams were created in a similar manner, and that the reference book in question is used as a supplementary textbook for the subject.

An official from the Office of Education explained, "The standard for determining similarity is 30%, but these questions appear to have exceeded that threshold," adding, "However, it is not the case that all questions were copied or used exactly as they were."

A total of 39 students took the exam in question, and the school is currently considering both a retest and disciplinary action against the teacher involved. The Office of Education is also investigating whether the school properly provided exam management training to the teacher in question.
