Difficulties in Submission and Storage Due to Recent Fire
Unavoidable Change in Schedule and Venue
Applications Accepted from September 22 to 24
Results to Be Announced in October
The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism announced on July 10 that applications for the “Korea Buddhist Art Exhibition,” the nation’s most prestigious competition in the field of Buddhist art, will be accepted from September 22 to 24 at The Laville Art Center, located next to Bongeunsa Temple in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Due to the recent fire at the International Conference Hall of the Korean Buddhist History and Culture Memorial Hall, the schedule and venue have been changed, as it has become difficult to accept and store works at the original location.
The judging will take place in October through a review by the judging committee, which will select the Grand Prize winner (with a prize of 40 million won) as well as other award recipients (Excellence Prize, Merit Prize, Encouragement Prize, Special Selection, and Honorable Mention). The final selected works will be exhibited from November 26 to December 3 on the first and second floors of Ground Seoul (formerly Ara Art Center).
The Korea Buddhist Art Exhibition is held in four categories: painting, sculpture, crafts, and media art. Detailed guidelines and application forms can be found on the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism’s official website.
First launched in 1970, the Korea Buddhist Art Exhibition is the most prestigious art competition in the field of Buddhist art in Korea.
A representative of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism stated, “We ask for your understanding regarding the unavoidable change in schedule due to the unexpected fire at the Korean Buddhist History and Culture Memorial Hall,” and added, “We request your continued interest and active participation for the preservation and development of Buddhist art.”
