Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province (Mayor Chung Kimyung), announced on July 10 that it had recently signed a business agreement with six local credit unions for the "Development of Yeosu's Drone Industry, Regional Coexistence, and the Successful Hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo." This agreement was made as Yeosu City moves forward this year with the full-scale commercialization of island drone delivery services.
The participating credit unions?Yeosu Jeil, Yeosu Jungang, Yeosu Chamjoeun, Ssangbong, Yeosu, and Yeocheon?will promote the island drone delivery project for the next three years. This year, they have pledged to donate goods worth 10 million KRW.
The donated goods will be delivered by drone twice a month for five months to senior centers and other facilities on ten islands equipped with drone delivery stations (Songdo, Daedurado, Sodedurado, Daehoenggando, Sohoenggando, Geumodo, Gaedo, Jedo, Sanghwado, and Hahwado) by November.
Kim Seongsu, Chairman of Yeosu Jeil Credit Union, stated, "I am pleased that we can help address welfare blind spots in island areas, even in a small way," and added, "With this agreement as a starting point, local credit unions will actively work for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and for regional coexistence."
Mayor Chung Kimyung expressed his gratitude for the donation of goods, saying, "I sincerely thank you for your support," and added, "I expect the drone industry, as a future-oriented new industry, will become a positive example of virtuous cycles by improving living conditions and welfare in island areas."
Meanwhile, since 2023, the city has been selected for three consecutive years for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's drone demonstration project, receiving 1.3 billion KRW in national funding. Last year, Yeosu City was also recognized as an outstanding local government by the ministry for successfully carrying out the island goods delivery project.
