The program, held from the 20th to the 30th of last month, was part of KOICA's "Capacity Building Service for Strengthening the Startup and Business Innovation Support System in Quito, Ecuador." This is a mid- to long-term project running from December 2022 to March 2026.
Through this project, the Soongsil University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation is comprehensively carrying out various tasks in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, including: establishing startup policies, creating an innovation ecosystem, developing a master plan for an innovation center, operating a public innovation lab, facilitating technology transfer and commercialization, developing an industrial cluster, and implementing programs to strengthen startup capabilities.
The training program was attended by a total of 10 high-level officials, including the Mayor of Quito, members of the Quito City Council, advisors from the city government and the transportation corporation, the head of the metropolitan economic promotion agency (CONQUITO), the president of the small and medium enterprise support agency (CAPEIPI), the chair of the board of the Chamber of Technology and Industry (CITEC), and directors of the startup and innovation support agency (AEI).
To understand Seoul's startup and smart city policies, the delegation began with a meeting with the Deputy Mayor of Seoul and held a strategic meeting with the Seoul International Development Cooperation Agency. The group also visited the Seoul Metropolitan Council to discuss future cooperation plans with Seoul City Council member Heo Hoon.
During the process, the delegation strengthened its networking base with domestic companies and organizations through the "Future Business Forum" held on the 28th of last month. At this event, CONQUITO, a startup-related agency from Quito, signed separate MOUs with the Seoul Business Agency (SBA), INNOBIZ Association, and Seoul Center for Creative Economy and Innovation. Additionally, a tripartite agreement was signed among Soongsil University, SBA, and CONQUITO, establishing a foundation for practical cooperation in the startup sector going forward.
The delegation stated, "Through this program, we were able to gain a deep understanding of Korea's startup policies and systems," and added, "Based on this experience, we will promote innovation policies tailored to our own country's circumstances."
