Green-DA announced on July 9 that it has become the first company in the domestic food waste industry to successfully export feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), marking the company's official entry into the global market. This export took place immediately after the European Union (EU) implemented its mandatory SAF usage policy.
Green-DA possesses proprietary technology that converts previously unused waste-based vegetable oils into high-purity SAF feedstock. The company has an annual production capacity of over 10,000 tons.
In May, Green-DA obtained the ISCC EU international sustainability certification, thereby completing the SAF value chain covering the entire process from feedstock sourcing to production and sales.
SAF is a next-generation aviation fuel produced from sustainable resources such as vegetable oils and biomass. It can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels, making it a key factor in the global aviation industry's transition to carbon neutrality.
From this year, the EU has mandated that at least 2% of aviation fuel must be blended with SAF, with plans to increase this proportion to over 63% by 2050. In South Korea, the use of SAF on international flights will also become mandatory in stages, starting in 2027 with a requirement of at least 1%.
Hwang Gyuyong, CEO of Green-DA, stated, "This is the first case where discarded waste and our technology have come together to supply refineries. This export is only the beginning, and we will continue to showcase South Korea's technological capabilities in the global SAF feedstock market."
