As the sweltering heat causes people to sweat profusely even while standing still, citizens are growing weary. On a day when a heatwave warning was issued, a YouTuber moved many by offering a warm gesture to an elderly woman selling lettuce on the street.
Odongji, a YouTuber with about 200,000 subscribers, was conducting a live broadcast on his channel on July 2 when he happened to spot an elderly woman squatting barefoot on the street, selling lettuce. The sight of the woman sitting barefoot on a small box appeared precarious in the oppressive heat.
Odongji approached the woman and gently asked, "Mother, what are you doing here in this hot weather?" When the woman replied, "I planted this (lettuce) myself," Odongji asked, "How much is all of this?" The woman waved her hands, saying, "Oh, that's too much," but Odongji insisted, "I'll buy it all. Please go home quickly. How much is it?"
The basket full of lettuce was priced at 20,000 won. However, Odongji said, "I'll give you 50,000 won. Please go home quickly." At this, the woman burst into tears and shared her feelings, saying, "I have three sons, but ever since my husband passed away last year, it seems my sons visit even less."
Afterward, Odongji bought her a cool glass of misutgaru and went to withdraw cash to give to her. Odongji said, "It's a heatwave in Incheon. A heatwave warning was issued today. One of my subscribers gave me 200,000 won to pay for the lettuce, so I withdrew that money." Odongji continued, "I'll buy all the lettuce, so please go straight home. Buy some meat on your way and enjoy some samgyeopsal," as he handed her 200,000 won.
The woman, in tears, said, "Oh my, this is so much. What should I do? Without my husband, it feels like my sons ignore me even more and don't come to see me." Odongji replied, "That's enough. It's too hot, so please go home quickly, enjoy the cool breeze from the fan, and treat yourself to something delicious," as he took the bag of lettuce. The woman said, "I'll go home now.
