Busan Research Institute to Hold Busan Studies Book Concert, Sharing Research Achievements with Citizens

The Busan Research Institute Busan Studies Center (Director: Kwon Taesang) will hold the "2025 Busan Studies Book Concert" over three sessions from July 10 to August 14, 2025, to share the results of local research with citizens.

This book concert is designed as a forum for communication where citizens and experts can understand the region and imagine its future together, based on the three Busan Studies Series published in 2024 (General Series, Citizen Series, Research Series). The event will take place at the Hyeyummadang on the first basement floor of the Busan Library and will be co-hosted with the Busan Library, which specializes in Busan Studies.

The first book concert will be held at 3:00 p.m. on July 10, with the theme "Busan Bus, Connecting Citizens' Lives" from the Citizen Series. Professor Park Jeonga of Dong-A University, along with citizens and bus industry workers, will shed light on the changes in the city and its people through the 62-year history of Busan's city buses. The event will revisit everyday city life through scenes remembered by citizens, such as bus tickets and pickpocketing in the past.

The second session will take place at 3:00 p.m. on July 17, focusing on the General Series "A History of Busan Urban Parks." Professors Kim Youngha of Dong-A University and Kim Haechang of Kyungsung University will discuss the development and transformation of urban parks, as well as their historical and environmental significance for citizens. More than 20 parks, including Yongdusan Park, Citizen Park, and Hwangnyeongsan Park, will be featured as major examples.

The final event will be held at 3:00 p.m. on August 14, with the theme "Dongnae Merchants and Busan" from the Research Series, featuring Professor Kim Dongcheol of Pusan National University and two other participants. The session will provide an academic interpretation of the activities of Dongnae merchants, the region's commercial culture, and their economic significance from the late Joseon Dynasty through the Japanese colonial period.

Director Kwon Taesang stated, "This book concert goes beyond a simple lecture, serving as a venue for citizen participation and knowledge exchange created together by researchers and citizens," and added, "I hope it will be an opportunity for participants to directly engage with topics of interest and reflect together on Busan's history and identity."
