Achieved in Just 7 Years and 7 Months Since December 2017
Fastest Record in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam Regions
Sungkyunkwan University Samsung Changwon Hospital surpassed 3,000 cases of advanced robotic surgery on July 8, achieving this milestone in the shortest period among hospitals in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regions, and solidifying its position as a leading hospital for robotic surgery in the area.
Samsung Changwon Hospital Achieves 3,000 Cases of Advanced Robotic Surgery, the Fastest in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.
Samsung Changwon Hospital began its robotic surgery program in earnest after introducing the advanced robotic surgical system 'da Vinci Xi' in December 2017. In 2021, the hospital became the first in Busan and Gyeongnam to add the 'da Vinci SP (Single Port)' robotic system, bringing the total number of robotic surgical systems in operation to two.
Thanks to the steady growth of its robotic surgery program, Samsung Changwon Hospital reached 1,000 cases in December 2021, 2,000 cases in October 2023, and 3,000 cases in July 2025?achieving the fastest growth rate in the region within just 7 years and 7 months since the program's inception. By department, obstetrics and gynecology accounted for the most procedures with 1,230 cases (41%), followed by general surgery with 871 cases (29%) and urology with 841 cases (28%).
Samsung Changwon Hospital has distinguished itself in the fields of robotic breast cancer surgery and single-port robotic surgery. The hospital successfully performed the nation’s first robotic breast-conserving surgery and is conducting joint research on robotic breast-conserving surgery with the US-based company Intuitive Surgical, thereby gaining international recognition for its surgical capabilities.
Additionally, the hospital has been designated as the first observation and training center in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam for robotic total mastectomy and simultaneous reconstruction using the da Vinci SP system. As such, it is actively involved in disseminating robotic surgical techniques by providing surgery observation and training opportunities for medical professionals from Korea and abroad. In particular, da Vinci SP robotic surgery requires more advanced surgical skills than the da Vinci Xi, demonstrating that Samsung Changwon Hospital’s capabilities in robotic breast cancer surgery are among the best in Korea.
Moreover, the hospital applies advanced robotic surgery techniques in various departments, including obstetrics and gynecology, urology, and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, offering more delicate and precise medical care for the treatment of serious diseases.
Kim Changwoon, Director of the Robotic Surgery Center in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Samsung Changwon Hospital, stated, "Samsung Changwon Hospital operates both the da Vinci Xi and SP systems, providing tailored robotic surgeries specialized for each patient’s condition and specific disease. With the achievement of 3,000 cases, we will continue to conduct research and strengthen our clinical capabilities in collaboration with medical professionals from various fields, so that we can offer new hope to local residents in the treatment of severe and complex diseases."
