Transforming Credit Card Plates into Contemporary Artworks
Hyundai Card collaborates with Tom Sachs for a unique art experiment
Hyundai Card and world-renowned artist Tom Sachs have embarked on an experiment to transform credit card plates into contemporary art pieces.
On July 8, Hyundai Card announced the launch of the "Hyundai Card Tom Sachs Credit Card" in collaboration with Tom Sachs.
A Hyundai Card representative explained the project, saying, "It is significant that Hyundai Card, which has established numerous 'rules' in the Korean financial market for over 20 years, is joining forces with Tom Sachs, an icon of contemporary art."
The Tom Sachs Credit Card comes in four versions: Metal, crafted from duralumin and bronze; Plywood, which delicately highlights the wood grain of plywood; Fluorescent Red, featuring a striking contrast between the front and back; and White, showcasing Tom Sachs' handwritten design.
While there have been many cases where artists' works were transferred onto credit card plates to borrow elements of art, it has been extremely rare for the card plate itself to be created as an art piece.
In particular, the Metal version is provided in a "Hand Craft Box" card package designed by Tom Sachs. This package reflects his signature bricolage technique, allowing users to fully experience his artistic world.
A Hyundai Card official stated, "Through this collaboration with Tom Sachs, an artist who deeply understands Hyundai Card's philosophy, we aim to differentiate our members' card usage experience and make the moment of taking out a credit card from the wallet even more special."
The Tom Sachs Credit Card is not a separate credit card product, but a special design plate. Hyundai Card members can apply for it additionally and possess and use a total of two plates (the basic plate plus the Tom Sachs Credit Card) simultaneously.
Any member of Hyundai Originals, including Hyundai Card M, MM, X, Z, and ZERO, can receive it. Those who are not Hyundai Card members can apply for an Originals product and the Tom Sachs Credit Card at the same time.
Further details can be found on the Hyundai Card application (app) and website.
Hyundai Card has reshaped the financial industry by launching Korea's leading point credit card "Hyundai Card M," premium cards, the world's first data science-based merchant-exclusive credit card (PLCC), and by exporting AI-based hyper-personalized data marketing solutions.
Tom Sachs, often called the "second Andy Warhol," is a globally acclaimed artist who primarily uses the bricolage technique, reinterpreting everyday materials into art. He has garnered attention for infusing art into products through collaborations with major global brands such as Nike, Levi's, and Helinox.
He is also receiving enthusiastic responses in Korea through the "Hyundai Card Culture Project 29: Tom Sachs Exhibition" currently being held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul.
