Jeonnam Province announced on July 8 that 20 villages in the region (19 rural and 1 urban) have been selected for the 2026 Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Renovation Project, organized by the Presidential Committee for Balanced National Development, securing 34.6 billion won in national funding.
A total of 172 villages across the country applied for the project. The committee selected 102 locations (85 rural and 17 urban) through a document review, in-person interviews, and on-site evaluations.
The Vulnerable Area Living Conditions Renovation Project has been implemented since 2015 to provide residents in underdeveloped areas with safe housing and basic living infrastructure.
Through this project, support will be provided for expanding living and sanitation infrastructure, including: renovation of old houses or vacant homes, improvement of slate roofs, maintenance of fences and retaining walls, upgrading of traditional toilets, and repair of water and sewage systems.
In addition, a variety of programs to revitalize local communities will be carried out, such as elderly care services, health management programs, and resident capacity-building projects.
For the selected villages, the project will be implemented over four to five years starting in 2026, with an average investment of 2.3 billion won per rural village and 4.7 billion won per urban village.
Yoon Jin-ho, Director of Planning and Coordination at Jeonnam Province, stated, "The selection in this project provides a crucial opportunity to dramatically improve the living conditions of residents facing poor housing environments. We will ensure the smooth implementation of the selected projects by providing ongoing consulting and regular monitoring, so that the effects of the project become visible as early as possible."
In Jeonnam, a total of 199 villages have been selected over the past 11 years. Of these, 100 villages have completed the project, while 99 villages are currently in progress.
