Buyeo County Officially Declares Korea's First "Historical and Cultural Garden City"

On July 8, Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province announced that it had officially declared the vision of "Buyeo, a Historical and Cultural Garden City" for the first time in Korea at Gungnamji, the nation's first garden, on July 4.

The proclamation ceremony consisted of the declaration of the garden city vision, a symbolic performance, and a future garden presentation. The unified city vision, "Buyeo, a historical and cultural garden city inheriting the Baekje garden tradition," was publicly announced both domestically and internationally.

Park Junghyun, the county governor, stated, "We will plant a new tomorrow as a garden city on the foundation of Baekje's splendid dignity," and added, "Through the harmony of nature and life, we will enhance the pride of our residents, become a source of national pride for Korea, and emerge as a hub for garden culture on the global stage."

The garden city initiative promoted by the county goes beyond simple landscape improvement or landscaping projects. It is notable for being a "cultural convergence-type ecological city" that incorporates the identity and cultural heritage of Baekje.

This is being evaluated as a future-oriented urban regeneration model that embeds stories within gardens and inscribes culture into spaces.

This vision declaration marks the starting point of a mid- to long-term plan to realize a sustainable urban model centered on the Baekmagang Ecological Garden, including urban regeneration, garden tourism, and healing industries linked to local agriculture. The county plans to gradually implement various garden-based infrastructure and policies.

In particular, the county is actively advancing the Garden Culture Expansion Platform Project (KRW 30 billion) and the Baekmagang Garden Creation Project (KRW 35 billion), both selected as part of the second phase of South Chungcheong Province's balanced development initiative.

The main components include the construction of a Garden Promotion Center and Visitor Center, the operation of the "Gardenist Academy" for training garden experts, and the creation of the Baekmagang Ecological Garden.

Starting with the "Seodong Lotus Festival" and the declaration of the garden city vision, the county plans to actively promote Buyeo's brand value and status as a garden city where Baekje's historical culture and ecology coexist, aiming to expand its reputation beyond Korea to the world.
