Stole Vehicles and Cash Across Jeju Island
Injured Police Officers While Crashing Into Patrol Car During Escape
It has been revealed that two middle school students who stole a vehicle and fled in Jeju committed additional crimes by stealing other vehicles and cash at various locations across the island.
According to the Jeju West Police Station on July 7, further offenses committed by two 14-year-old boys, identified as A and B, who were booked on charges including obstruction of special official duties resulting in injury, were confirmed during the investigation.
On July 2 at around 12:20 a.m., they allegedly stole a sport utility vehicle (SUV) from a parking lot in Seogwipo-si, Seogwi-dong, and drove it to Jeju-si, causing multiple traffic accidents while fleeing. That evening, A and B ignored police orders to stop, rammed into patrol cars and other vehicles at speeds exceeding 100 km/h, and fled the scene. When a pursuing patrol car blocked their path, they repeatedly crashed into the patrol car and also collided with parked vehicles. As a result, two police officers inside the patrol car were reportedly injured.
Even after this, they continued to flee, abandoning the SUV in Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, and stealing another vehicle to escape again. After a pursuit, police apprehended A and B in Seogwipo-si in the early morning of July 3. The two are known to be friends who met through a mutual acquaintance and are currently attending school.
Additional crimes committed by the two were also confirmed during the investigation. At around 5:30 a.m. on June 28, they stole a vehicle in Oedo-dong, Jeju-si, and then stole 300,000 won in cash from an unmanned store in Aewol-eup. Two days later, at around 12:30 a.m. on June 30, they stole another vehicle in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si. The two middle school students are currently in custody for violating the Juvenile Protection Act and other charges.
The police are investigating the two on charges including obstruction of special official duties resulting in injury, special theft, driving without a license, fleeing in a vehicle under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, and violation of the Road Traffic Act.
