On July 7, President Lee Jae Myung had a luncheon with Prime Minister Kim Min Seok and instructed him to establish measures to prevent safety incidents and fatalities. He also requested efforts to secure talent in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and to resolve legislative conflicts.
Woo Sangho, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, stated at a Presidential Office briefing on July 7, "President Lee specifically asked Prime Minister Kim to pay closer attention to areas such as safety, public order, and people's livelihoods." Woo added, "He emphasized the need for special attention to ensure that fatal accidents do not occur, or at least decrease in number." He continued, "For example, he asked for particular efforts to reduce fatalities in areas such as industrial accidents, natural disasters that could be considered man-made, and traffic accidents."
There were also discussions on individual issues. According to Woo, President Lee instructed Prime Minister Kim to "devise measures to secure top-tier talent in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology," in response to recent reports that domestic talent is leaving the country. President Lee also received a report that he would soon meet with stakeholders regarding the medical student quota and their return, and he asked Prime Minister Kim to "actively work to resolve the issue."
Prime Minister Kim proposed future work coordination measures to President Lee. He stated that he would be responsible for: follow-up checks on the national policy directions presented by the President; identifying new and long-term agenda items; resolving issues of social conflict; inspecting the executive branch and national affairs; and handling other matters presented and delegated by the President. It has been reported that President Lee agreed with Prime Minister Kim's proposal.
Meanwhile, President Lee and Prime Minister Kim have decided to make their meetings a regular event, agreeing to meet every Monday.
