A Platform for Interdisciplinary Research and Cultural Policy Strategies
Toward the Establishment of the Busan National University K-Culture Research Institute
Busan National University (President Choi Jaewon) is officially launching the establishment of a research institute to foster "K-Culture," which encompasses both traditional culture and contemporary Hallyu, as an academic and policy platform.
The Busan National University K-Culture Research Committee will hold the "Busan National University K-Culture Research Forum" on July 10 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Gaonnarae Hall of the university museum.
This forum aims to explore the academic direction and policy linkage potential of the K-Culture Research Institute, which Busan National University is preparing to establish within this year. "K-Culture" is one of the university's ten major research focus areas, alongside fields such as marine climate tech and the defense industry. The core strategy is to expand content on an academic basis through convergence with various fields, including digital humanities, locality, and traditional arts.
The event will be held under the theme "The Future Direction and Tasks of the Busan National University K-Culture Research Institute." Professor Jung Jongun of the Department of Arts, Culture, and Visual Studies at Busan National University will discuss the significance and prospects of Hallyu within the context of Korean cultural policy trends. Jung Gilhwa, Director of the Hallyu Convergence Institute at Dongguk University, will present on Hallyu strategies from the perspective of university education and research policy. Cho Yujang, Director of the Culture Bureau of Busan City, will explain the city's cultural policies and the potential for utilizing Hallyu.
The subsequent general discussion will be moderated by Lee Hwajin, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Busan National University. The discussion will address topics such as the potential for interdisciplinary expansion of K-Culture, the role of regional hub universities as policy partners, and strategies for re-examining Hallyu from an academic perspective.
Starting with this forum, Busan National University plans to promote region-based cultural policy and academic research, curriculum development, and cultural industry-linked projects centered on the K-Culture Research Committee. The university will also accelerate the establishment of governance and networks for the research institute.
Lee Eunryeong, Chair of the Busan National University K-Culture Research Committee (Professor of French Language and Literature), stated, "This forum is the first step in approaching K-Culture as an academic platform rather than as industrial content," adding, "Busan National University will take a leading role in establishing a new academic model that ensures sustainability and globalization."
