Gyeongsangnam-do plans to accelerate the development of a Gyeongnam-style manufacturing chat-GPT and 'physical artificial intelligence (AI)'.
On July 7, Gyeongsangnam-do announced that it had secured 19.7 billion KRW in national funding for the 'Physical AI Development Pilot Project' in the government's second supplementary budget, which passed the National Assembly last week.
Physical AI refers to next-generation artificial intelligence installed in hardware such as humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles, which independently perceives situations and performs tasks.
Gyeongnam Technopark, Gyeongnam National University, Seoul National University, and Google Cloud Korea are participating in the project. They will collect and validate data from eight mid-sized manufacturing companies in the province, including Samhyun and CTR, which are related to automotive parts, to drive development.
Alongside this project, the province aims to successfully carry out the 'Hyper-scale Manufacturing AI Service Development Project', which secured funding last year, and attract the government's 600 billion KRW physical AI project scheduled to begin next year.
In addition, with the goal of making Gyeongsangnam-do the 'Mecca of Manufacturing AI', the province is committed to building an AI industry ecosystem and accelerating the AI transformation (AX) of its core industries.
To this end, in July this year, the province established the Artificial Intelligence Industry Division and is formulating a master plan for fostering the AI industry in Gyeongsangnam-do. It is also working to attract the National AI Computing Center, create a 1 trillion KRW Manufacturing AI Innovation Valley by 2031, and support domestic AI-based solutions for small and mid-sized companies in the province.
The 'Gyeongnam Innovation Academy', which will launch next year, will introduce the program of France's 'Ecole 42', considered the world's leading institution for cultivating top AI talent.
Yoon In-guk, Director of the Provincial Industry Bureau, said, "We are pleased that securing national funding in the government’s supplementary budget will enable Gyeongnam to lead the ultra-gap future technology of physical AI," adding, "We will promptly foster the AI industry in the province and accelerate the AI transformation of our core industries based on this."
