Swimming Pool, Central Care Facility
Full-scale Promotion of Lifelong Learning Facility Construction
Geochang County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on July 7 that the "Geochang Elementary School Multi-purpose Facility Construction Project" has gained momentum after passing the central fiscal investment review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
This project was selected in August last year as part of a public offering by the Ministry of Education and is being promoted with 50% of the total cost funded by the national government. The total project budget is 29.8 billion won. The multi-purpose facility will have one basement level and five above-ground floors. The main features include a swimming pool on the first floor, after-school care classrooms on the second floor, experiential play facilities and club rooms as well as after-school rooms on the third floor, lifelong learning facilities on the fourth floor, and a cafe on the fifth floor. The plan is to construct the new building after demolishing the current annex within Geochang Elementary School.
To advance the project, the county requested a local fiscal investment review from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as a preliminary procedure in April. In order to secure approval, county officials visited the ministry twice to actively explain the necessity of the project, the expected demand, and its feasibility. As a result, the project has now passed the investment review.
The project is currently in the preliminary review stage for public architecture projects by South Gyeongsang Province. Going forward, Geochang County will proceed with all related administrative procedures, aiming to complete the public architecture review, conduct detailed design in 2026, begin construction in 2027, and finish the project in 2029.
County Governor Koo Inmo stated, "The project plan, which includes a swimming pool that has been lacking in infrastructure compared to the needs of students and residents, has passed the central investment review, making it possible to move forward in earnest." He added, "As an educational landmark, the multi-purpose facility will not only feature a swimming pool, but also serve as a central care facility enabling creative experiential learning throughout the day, and as an open educational and cultural complex space where a variety of lifelong learning programs can be operated."
