Busan Launches Full-Scale 'Cancer-Specialized City' Strategy with BIG Biohealth Forum

Busan City is launching a full-scale biohealth industry strategy to establish itself as a cancer-specialized city.


On July 7 at 2 p.m., the city announced that it would hold the '2025 BIG (Busan Is Good) Biohealth Forum' at the Grand Ballroom of Asti Hotel Busan, seeking ways to foster collaboration among industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals to build a comprehensive cancer healthcare ecosystem.


This event, hosted by Busan City and co-organized by Busan Technopark and the Regional Medical Innovation Center of Seoul National University College of Medicine, is being held for the second time following last year's inaugural forum. More than 100 participants, including biohealth experts, hospital directors, and corporate representatives, attended.


The theme of this year's forum is 'Busan's Strategy as a Cancer-Specialized City.' Kang Daehee, professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine and biohealth policy advisor for Busan City, delivered the keynote speech titled 'Busan as a Cancer-Specialized City!'


Subsequent expert presentations will address topics such as cancer treatment strategies utilizing digital technology, the role of the Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, and the establishment of a hospital-centered cancer treatment ecosystem.


Presenters include Han Mingyu, Executive Director at Kakao Healthcare, who will introduce 'Healthcare Services for Cancer Survivors'; Choi Dua, CEO of Huray Positive, who will present on 'Cloud-Based Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS)'; and Lee Changhun, Director of the Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences, who will discuss 'Strategies for Building a Cancer Treatment Hub.' In addition, Ji Daeyoon, CEO of FutureChem, will present on overcoming cancer using radiopharmaceuticals, and Cho Hongjae, Director of the Busan Regional Cancer Center, will provide an overview of the local cancer ecosystem.


Han Wonsik, Director of the Breast Cancer Center at Seoul National University Hospital, will address 'Personalized Medicine for Breast Cancer,' and Nam Kiyoun, CEO of Qurient, will discuss 'Development of Personalized Therapeutics,' outlining directions for bio new drugs and precision medicine.


In a panel discussion moderated by policy advisor Kang Daehee, participants will include Cho Hongjae, Director of the Busan Regional Cancer Center; Lee Changhun, Director of the Dongnam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences; Ji Daeyoon, CEO of FutureChem; Nam Kiyoun, CEO of Qurient; Shin Jaeguk, CEO of SP Med and professor at Inje University College of Medicine; and Han Mingyu, Executive Director. The panel will cover strategies for responding to the entire cancer care cycle, from prevention to survivor management.


Through this forum, Busan City plans to strengthen the foundation for collaboration among industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals in the biohealth sector, and to establish an operational council and working committee to implement concrete tasks toward realizing a 'cancer-specialized city.'


Lee Joonseung, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Busan City, emphasized, "With rapid aging, cancer prevention, early diagnosis, precision treatment, and survivor management are becoming increasingly important," adding, "We will build a cancer-specialized city brand based on Busan's infrastructure in radiotherapy, heavy ion accelerators, and advanced regenerative medicine."
