800 Athletes Swim in Seokchon Lake and Climb Lotte World Tower Stairs
Lotte Improves Seokchon Lake Water Quality Since August 2021
Lotte World Tower announced on July 6 that the '2025 Lotte Aquathlon' concluded successfully.
Now in its fourth year since launching in the summer of 2022, the Lotte Aquathlon is a competition that combines swimming and a vertical marathon. Participants swam two laps around Seokchon Lake (a total of 1.5 km) and then climbed all 2,917 stairs from the 1st to the 123rd floor of Lotte World Tower.
This year’s event drew a total of about 800 participants, including international athletes. Registration, which opened on May 23, closed in less than a day due to high demand. There were 162 athletes who participated for three consecutive years.
In the competition results, Jang Hyunil (23) from Cheonan City Hall won the men’s division with a time of 44 minutes and 25 seconds, while Lee Jihyun (42) topped the women’s division with a time of 53 minutes and 18 seconds. The winners received medals, and the top three men and women were awarded Spider gift certificates worth 1 million won for first place, 700,000 won for second place, and 500,000 won for third place.
Jang, who took first place in the men’s division, said, “This is my third time participating, but it’s my first time winning, so it feels very special. Seokchon Lake was clean and the water temperature was just right, making it an ideal environment for swimming.”
Park Jongsup (74), the oldest participant in this year’s competition, commented, “The event was perfectly organized, so I could enjoy both swimming and running. The water was so clean that I felt like my skin was improving as I swam.”
Since August 2021, Lotte has been working with Songpa District Office to improve the water quality of Seokchon Lake. As a result, the lake has received a Grade 1 rating in most water quality environmental criteria. In tests conducted in June for the event, commissioned by the Korea Triathlon Federation, the lake also passed the E. coli and turbidity standards.
Jang Jaehun, CEO of Lotte Mulsan, said in his opening remarks, “This unique event, set against the backdrop of Seokchon Lake and Lotte World Tower, has become a symbol of harmony between the environment and the city. I hope everyone can fully appreciate the transformed Seokchon Lake thanks to our water quality improvement project.”
