K-sports Takes Flight in the US... Tongmyong University Taekwondo Department to Join World Taekwondo Hanmadang

Local Cultural Exchange Included

Students from the Department of Taekwondo at Tongmyong University are heading to the United States to promote "K-sports."

They will participate in the World Taekwondo Hanmadang International Competition, which will be held in Los Angeles, United States, from July 17 to July 19. In addition, they have been invited to perform a demonstration at the opening ceremony of the Korea-US Taekwondo Tournament, which will take place at the Houston Convention Center.

This trip will include 18 first- and second-year students from the K-sports Taekwondo Department. By presenting a demonstration stage that combines traditional Taekwondo techniques with creative performances, they aim to showcase the prestige of Korean Taekwondo to an audience of over 2,000 people from around the world.

The university plans to go beyond a simple performance by having participating students visit local Taekwondo studios in the United States to experience Taekwondo culture and educational environments through a "Dojo Culture Exploration Program." They will also take part in Taekwondo events connected to the local community. This initiative is expected to contribute to international cultural exchange and the promotion of friendship.

The university stated that this program will provide students with a valuable opportunity to directly introduce traditional Korean martial arts and culture on the global stage. To this end, on July 4, the university held the "Taekwondo in the World, Beginning at Tongmyong - 2025 Kickoff Ceremony" and officially began preparations.

Previously, Tongmyong University continued its cultural diplomacy efforts through Taekwondo by performing at various international venues, including a halftime demonstration at the 2022 NFL Washington Commanders game in the United States and an invited performance at the Korea-Japan Friendship Festival in Fukuoka, Japan.

The university emphasized, "This visit to the United States will help students develop a global perspective and strengthen their capabilities as Taekwondo diplomatic envoys," adding, "We plan to continuously expand the cultivation of Taekwondo talent worldwide through global Taekwondo education and overseas advancement."
