National Policy Planning Committee: "AI, Labor, and Safety Regulations to Be Redesigned with a Focus on Effectiveness" Yonhap News

The Regulatory Rationalization Task Force (TF) within the National Policy Planning Committee, which serves as the transition team for the Lee Jaemyung administration, held its second meeting on July 5 and discussed the new administration's regulatory philosophy as well as policy directions for regulation in the areas of labor and safety, and artificial intelligence (AI).

During the meeting, TF members engaged in discussions on the new administration's regulatory philosophy and regulatory redesign plans, rationalization measures for labor and safety regulations, and directions for regulatory innovation in the AI sector.

Professor Lee Minchang of Chosun University presented on the "New Administration's Regulatory Philosophy and Regulatory Redesign Plans," outlining regulatory policy directions centered on three pillars: growth, social integration, and the establishment of a foundation for regulatory reform.

Jung Heungjun, an expert member of the Social Affairs Division 1, emphasized in his presentation on "Rationalization Measures for Labor and Safety Regulations" that even if regulations on corporate activities are relaxed, appropriate control mechanisms are necessary for issues that could affect the lives and safety of the public.

The presentation on the AI sector was delivered by Song Kyunghee, a planning committee member of the Economic Affairs Division 2. Song proposed that, in order to promote the AI industry, comprehensive support should be provided for the construction of data centers, and regulations related to personal information and copyright should be rationalized.

Oh Kihyung, head of the Regulatory Rationalization TF, stated, "By analyzing the reasons why regulatory improvements have not been sufficiently felt in the past, the Lee Jaemyung administration must establish an effective implementation system and achieve tangible results in key areas such as AI."

He added, "We will prepare effective implementation plans for each key task, including strengthening the effectiveness of the regulatory sandbox, easing economic criminal penalties, and promoting proactive administration to improve the behavior of the public sector."
