Briefing Session on the 'Local Brand Commercial Area Development Project'
Kyunghee Damgil Commercial District to Receive 1 Billion KRW in Support Through Next Year
On July 5, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul announced that it held a briefing session for the '2025 Dongdaemun-gu Local Brand Commercial Area Development Project' at Seoul Bio Hub on July 3, and has begun efforts to develop the 'Kyunghee Damgil' (tentative name) commercial area and create a global attraction.

Kyunghee Damgil refers to a local brand-specialized street currently being developed around the commercial district in front of Kyung Hee University, with the meaning of 'Kyunghee + a street where stories flow.'
Jointly hosted with the Dongdaemun branch of the Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation, the briefing session provided local merchants, residents, and prospective entrepreneurs with a comprehensive overview of the project's objectives, progress, and future plans.
This year, the district plans to focus on discovering unique stories and building a commercial brand identity exclusive to Kyunghee Damgil. It aims to actively utilize the youthful and international atmosphere in front of Kyung Hee University, various resources such as the nearby Cheonjangsan Mountain and Hongneung, and the distinctive alleys where unique restaurants, cafes, and small shops harmonize.
Lee Pilhyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "Kyunghee Damgil is a commercial area where Dongdaemun-gu’s educational, cultural, medical, and traditional Korean medicine assets are concentrated. Through this project, we will transform it into an attractive urban alley commercial area that draws in and retains young people, foreigners, and local residents alike, creating a new model for a glocal commercial district where tradition and modernity, local and global, coexist."
Kyunghee Damgil was recently selected as a final winner in Seoul's '2025 Local Brand Commercial Area Development Project' competition, and will receive a budget of 1 billion KRW over the next two years to launch a full-scale commercial area revitalization initiative.
The Local Brand Commercial Area Development Project is a flagship support policy that discovers and brands the unique identities and resources of local areas, and provides integrated support for improving the commercial environment, planning content, and strengthening the capabilities of small business owners.
Through this project, Dongdaemun-gu plans to rebrand Kyunghee Damgil as a 'commercial alley where people want to stay,' and develop it as a sustainable hub of local economic vitality.
