"Democratic Party Lost Its Direction When I Was 30"
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, criticized the U.S. Democratic Party and stated that he currently does not feel a sense of political affiliation with any party.
On July 4 (local time), Altman wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "I don't care much about identity, but I feel a great sense of pride in being American," adding, "I firmly believe that the United States is the greatest country on Earth." July 4 is Independence Day in the United States.
Altman went on to say, "I believe in techno-capitalism. We should encourage people to make enormous amounts of money, and then find ways to widely distribute wealth and share the compounding effects of capitalism with everyone. Neither is possible without the other."
He continued, "When I was 20, the Democratic Party seemed to reasonably align with those beliefs, but by the time I was 30, it had lost its direction, and now it has gone completely somewhere else. So at this point, I am politically homeless."
Altman also said, "I want to hear from (party) candidates not about how to eliminate billionaires, but about how to make what billionaires have available to everyone."
This is interpreted as a response to remarks made by New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani, who was nominated as the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor. At the end of last month, during an appearance on NBC, Mamdani explained his pledge to increase taxes on the wealthy, saying, "I don't think there should be billionaires. Because, honestly, in a time of such severe inequality, that's just too much money, and ultimately, what our city, state, and country need more is equality."
