The Gwangju City General Construction Headquarters announced on July 4 that it will implement 'partial traffic control' on Eodeung Bridge (Mujin-ro → City Hall direction) and Geukrak Bridge (Sangmu-daero → City Hall direction), where 'nighttime expansion joint replacement work' will be carried out from August 8 to August 20.

This construction project is being promoted to secure the structural stability of the bridges and ensure traffic safety. Previously, concerns had been raised about noise, vibration, and structural damage due to the deterioration of the expansion joint function caused by repeated heavy vehicle loads.

Eodeung Bridge is a route heavily used by heavy vehicles traveling between the Kia Motors plant and the Pyeongdong Industrial Complex, while Geukrak Bridge is an outer ring road connecting the Sangmu District and Songjeong area, with high traffic volumes.

In particular, a section of Eodeung Bridge had emergency repairs in November 2024 after part of its expansion joint was damaged. The upcoming work is a follow-up maintenance project focusing on structural reinforcement at that location.

The General Construction Headquarters will conduct all construction processes at night (from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) to minimize inconvenience to citizens. Eodeung Bridge will undergo sequential construction by section from August 8 to August 15 (8 days), and Geukrak Bridge from August 8 to August 20 (13 days). Accordingly, flexible vehicle traffic control will be implemented during these periods and hours.

On Eodeung Bridge, one lane out of five in each direction will be sequentially closed. On Geukrak Bridge, the 4th and 5th lanes out of five in each direction will be closed, allowing traffic to use lanes 1 to 3. Construction schedules and detour information will be provided in real time via variable message signboards (VMS).

Shin Jaeuk, head of the General Construction Headquarters, stated, "This project focuses on maintenance, including structural reinforcement of the damaged section of Eodeung Bridge, with an emphasis on citizen safety and improving bridge functionality. As some inconvenience is expected during the construction period, we kindly ask for the cooperation of all citizens."
