Bloomberg: "China Imposes 34.9% Anti-Dumping Tariffs on EU Brandy"

Chinese Ministry of Commerce Issues Statement on July 4
Measures Take Effect for Imports Starting Tomorrow

Bloomberg: "China Imposes 34.9% Anti-Dumping Tariffs on EU Brandy" Reuters Yonhap News

The Chinese government announced on July 4, 2025, that it has decided to impose anti-dumping duties of up to 34.9% on European brandy products for a period of five years.

According to Bloomberg News, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated in a press release on the same day that, following a month-long investigation, it concluded that the European Union (EU) had engaged in dumping by selling large quantities of EU-produced brandy at low prices, which has negatively affected the Chinese industry. As a result, the ministry made this decision.

The duties will be applied immediately to products imported starting July 5, 2025, and the applicable tariff rates will range from 27.3% to 34.9%.

As a result, major French liquor companies such as Remy Cointreau and Pernod Ricard are expected to be hit hard. Hennessy, the cognac brand under the French luxury group LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), is also expected to be affected.

Bloomberg News interpreted this move as a response to the EU's decision to impose tariffs of up to 45% on Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. Previously, in October 2024, the European Commission announced that it would impose tariffs of up to 45% for five years on Chinese-made electric vehicles. As a result, an additional tariff of 7.8 to 35.3 percentage points was added to the existing general tariff of 10%, bringing the final tariff rate to between 17.8% and 45.3%.
