US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment on the 3rd (local time) regarding his phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is because Russia continues to insist that it will not stop the war in Ukraine unless its own conditions are accepted.
According to foreign media outlets including the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), President Trump made these remarks to reporters before boarding Air Force One after delivering a speech at the kickoff event for the 250th anniversary of US independence held in Iowa that evening. He said, "I was very disappointed with the conversation I had with President Putin today."
He added, "I think he is not ready yet." He also said, "He did not seem to have any intention of stopping," and added, "It's really unfortunate."
President Trump also announced that he is expected to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the morning of the 4th (the night of the 4th in Korea).
Previously, on his way to Iowa, President Trump told reporters that he had a "fairly long conversation" with President Putin and said there was "no progress" regarding a ceasefire in the Ukraine war.
President Putin has maintained his position that he will not back down until the original objectives of the war in Ukraine are achieved. He has cited Ukraine becoming a forward base for the West as the cause of the war, and has presented the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine as his goals.
Meanwhile, the phone conversation between President Trump and President Putin was the sixth one this year. It was also the first since the United States halted weapons shipments to Ukraine.
