Seodaemun District Reinvests "Miracle of Sharing 1%" Donations into Local Community

On July 4, Seodaemun District in Seoul announced that, as it enters the fourth year of its 8th popularly elected administration, it will begin actively reinvesting the funds raised through its signature sharing initiative, the "Miracle of Sharing 1%," back into the local community. This program involves small business owners, hospitals and clinics, and companies within the district entering into agreements with the district office to donate 1% of their profits to the community.

With enthusiastic participation from small business owners, the first participating business joined in October 2023, the 100th in November last year, and as of last month, a total of 133 businesses have signed agreements. The district uses the collected donations to support a variety of welfare programs, including home repairs for vulnerable residents, improving nutrition for seniors, delivering side dishes to young family caregivers, and providing emergency assistance to households in crisis.


In fact, at an old house in Hongje 3-dong where a man in his 70s lives, recent volunteer activities included wallpapering, replacing flooring, and inspecting for ceiling leaks. Seongheon Lee, mayor of Seodaemun District Office, participated in the volunteer work alongside the neighborhood leader and sponsors of the "Miracle of Sharing 1%," adding further significance to the event.


Yoonhye Lee, CEO of "Ruby's Garden," the 95th participating business, said after joining the wallpapering work that "it was even more rewarding to volunteer at the very site where our donations are being used."


Seongheon Lee, mayor of Seodaemun District Office, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the valuable donations collected from the community are delivered to those in need as efficiently as possible," and added, "I would like to once again thank the representatives of the participating shops and companies."
