Government Reorganization Under Discussion with Party, Government Agencies, and Presidential Office
The National Policy Planning Committee, which serves as the transition team for the Lee Jaemyung administration, will hold regional meetings with the 17 metropolitan and provincial governments nationwide from July 8 to 9. These meetings, organized by the Special Committee for National Balanced Development, will be divided into five regions (Honam, Daegyeong, Capital, Southeast, Chungcheong) and three special areas (Jeju, Gangwon, Jeonbuk). Deputy heads of each metropolitan and provincial government are expected to attend.
Cho Seungrae, spokesperson for the National Policy Planning Committee, stated during a regular briefing on July 4, "These meetings are intended to gather on-site opinions regarding balanced growth strategies and the prioritization of regional pledges for each city and province," adding, "We aim to reflect local voices from the policy formulation stage."
The topics for discussion include 'National Balanced Development Strategy,' 'Growth Strategies for Five Regions and Three Special Areas,' 'Development of Metropolitan Area Industries,' and 'Improvement of Living Conditions.' The committee plans to share the feedback collected during the meetings with relevant policy task forces and use it as a reference in the formulation of plans for the top 100 national policy tasks. Cho emphasized, "Proposals from the cities and provinces will be discussed with each task force to ensure they are reflected in the final national policy agenda."
As of July 4, the committee has narrowed down more than 1,400 proposed tasks to approximately 120 and has begun organizing the task framework for the upcoming five-year national administration plan.
Meanwhile, the Planning Subcommittee of the National Policy Planning Committee will hold a policy meeting on constitutional amendment on July 6. Cho noted, "President Lee Jaemyung personally pledged a 'National Unity Constitutional Amendment' regarding constitutional reform during the May 18 commemoration," adding, "This is an issue that should be considered for inclusion in the national policy agenda."
On May 18, during his candidacy and on the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement, President Lee posted a 'Statement on Constitutional Amendment' on Facebook. The statement included the following: 'Inclusion of the May 18 spirit in the preamble of the Constitution,' 'Introduction of a four-year presidential term with the possibility of re-election,' 'Limitation of presidential veto power,' 'Introduction of a system for the National Assembly to recommend the Prime Minister,' 'Appointment of the heads of the Corruption Investigation Office, Prosecutor General, National Police Agency, Korea Communications Commission, and National Human Rights Commission with the consent of the National Assembly,' 'Abolition of the prosecution's right to request warrants,' and 'Transfer of the Board of Audit and Inspection to the jurisdiction of the National Assembly.'
Regarding the government reorganization currently being developed by the National Policy Planning Committee, Cho stated, "We are actively sharing and communicating with the party, government agencies, and the presidential office at this stage."
