Two Sisters Lose Their Lives After Being Left Alone
Similar Incident Occurred in Busanjin-gu on June 24
Kim Kwangyong, Director-General of Disaster and Safety Management at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, visited the site of the apartment fire in Gijang-gun, Busan, where two children died on July 2, and presided over a meeting to discuss measures to prevent recurrence.
On July 4, Director-General Kim personally visited the accident site to inspect the situation and then attended a meeting on preventive measures held at Busan City Hall.
The meeting was attended by representatives from related agencies, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Fire Agency, the National Police Agency, Busan Metropolitan City, and Gijang-gun. Participants analyzed the causes of the accident and discussed measures to prevent recurrence, such as strengthening care services and establishing safety nets for vulnerable areas in aging apartment complexes.
Previously, on June 24, two sisters from a dual-income family died in a nighttime fire at an apartment in Busanjin-gu. Eight days later, another similar fire in Gijang-gun claimed the lives of two more sisters.
Director-General Kim stated, "I offer my deepest condolences for the loss of innocent young lives in this tragedy and extend my heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families." He added, "We will thoroughly investigate the causes of this accident and prepare comprehensive improvement measures at the pan-government level."
