Opportunity for Designation as a Hangeul Cultural City
Strengthening the Festival's Identity
The name of Sejong's representative festival, the Sejong Festival, will be changed to "Sejong Hangeul Festival." This change aims to further strengthen the identity of the Sejong Festival, which has been held annually since 2013 with King Sejong and Hangeul as its main themes. The Sejong Hangeul Festival will be held for three days at Sejong Lake Park, starting with the opening ceremony on Hangeul Day in October.
According to Sejong City on July 3, the new festival name was selected through a process of gathering various opinions, including a citizen sovereignty meeting, surveys, and the festival advisory committee. Results from citizen surveys conducted via the Sejong City app and in local districts showed that 80% of respondents agreed with the name change.
The festival advisory committee also agreed on the need for a concise and symbolic name centered on Hangeul.
The city plans to have the Sejong Hangeul Festival designated as a "Culture and Tourism Festival" by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and to make it even more attractive to tourists through specialized Hangeul programs.
Kim Ryeosu, Director of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "We expect the new name of the Sejong Hangeul Festival to greatly enhance the city's recognition and revitalize local tourism," adding, "We will continue to develop it into Korea's leading Hangeul festival that truly reflects Sejong's identity."
