Approximately 30 people attended the report meeting, including Wando County Governor Shin Woo-cheol, Professor Kim Janggyun of Incheon National University, Na Gi-hwan, an official from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Han Jongwon, director at the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, as well as advisory committee members, officials from South Jeolla Province, and county government employees.
During the meeting, the service provider delivered the final report on the basic plan for the expo, covering an analysis of the conditions for holding the seaweed expo, plans for establishing the main event venue, program composition for each exhibition hall, and strategies for obtaining approval as an international event. This was followed by a Q&A session and discussion with the advisory committee.
Advisors and participants shared a variety of opinions on strategies to enhance the likelihood of international event approval for the expo. They discussed the blue carbon value of seaweed in the era of climate crisis, the future growth potential of the seaweed industry, and ways to link the industry with the renewable energy sector.
Wando County and South Jeolla Province plan to incorporate the advisory opinions gathered at the meeting into the basic plan. They also intend to hold a "visiting resident briefing session" later this month to collect feedback from local residents before applying to the government for approval as an international event.
Governor Shin Woo-cheol stated, "The 2028 Wando International Seaweed Expo will be the world's first seaweed industry expo. It will promote the excellence of Jeonnam's seaweed both domestically and internationally, and strengthen the competitiveness of the marine industry."
