"Ma, If You Want to Connect, Do It Dandi!"... Busan Dialect Book Published by Professors from Other Regions

Professors from outside the region who are currently teaching at Pukyong National University have published a book introducing the charm of the Busan dialect, drawing public attention.

Yang Minho, a professor at the Pukyong National University Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (originally from Jeonju), and Choi Minkyoung, a professor from Seoul, recently published a book titled "A Dictionary Full of Usefulness: 101 Busan Dialect Expressions That Make You Laugh and Feel Connected Every Time You Speak" (Homilbat). The two professors have been regular guests for over two years on the popular segment "Baeabopsidae" on TBN Busan Traffic Broadcasting, sharing the sentiment of the dialect from an outsider's perspective.

The book contains a total of 101 expressions, ranging from representative words such as "ma," "goma," "naena," and "dandi," to words like "naennae" and "baksang," which reflect the unique emotions and landscapes of the dialect. It provides meanings, example sentences, and etymological explanations. The book is structured according to the emotions and situations associated with each word, offering both academic value and practical utility.

Professor Yang said, "I could feel the warmth in people's expressions and speech. Words that were unfamiliar at first have now become part of my everyday language, beyond just research." Professor Choi explained, "The Busan dialect is not just about intonation; it is the rhythm of life. Each word is imbued with emotion and scenery."

The book goes beyond the framework of a simple dictionary, offering an opportunity to newly discover the sentiment of Busan speech. The two professors said, "We never expected our lives in Busan would lead to a book like this," and added, "We hope it serves as a warm local guide for outsiders and as a chance for Busan residents to rediscover the familiar words in a new light."
