Park Sunghoon, spokesperson for the People Power Party, told reporters after a party meeting held at the National Assembly that day, "It has been decided that we will not take part in the vote on Kim Minseok's confirmation."
The National Assembly will hold a plenary session in the afternoon to vote on Kim Minseok's confirmation. Since the seats held by the Democratic Party and other pro-government parties make up a majority, it is expected that the confirmation will pass even without the People Power Party's support.
The People Power Party has repeatedly called for Kim Minseok to voluntarily withdraw, accusing him of "deceiving the public and the National Assembly by refusing to submit documents and making false statements." However, the Democratic Party has countered these claims, calling them "obstruction of state affairs."
However, the People Power Party will participate in votes on bills that have been agreed upon by both parties, such as the amendment to the Commercial Act. Park Sunghoon explained, "We plan to hold a protest while the confirmation of Kim Minseok is being processed," and added, "Once it is processed, we will enter the chamber to deal with the remaining agenda items."
Earlier, the ruling and opposition parties agreed to pass an amendment to the Commercial Act that expands the duty of loyalty for directors to include shareholders and limits the voting rights of the largest shareholder and related parties to 3% when appointing audit committee members.
Meanwhile, the People Power Party appointed Jung Jumsik, a three-term lawmaker from Tongyeong-Goseong in South Gyeongsang Province, as its new Secretary-General on July 3. Jung, who is considered part of the pro-Yoon Suk Yeol faction, will oversee preparations for the party convention scheduled for next month as well as administrative affairs for the party.
It has also been reported that Kim Jeongjae, a three-term lawmaker from Pohang Buk-gu in North Gyeongsang Province, has been nominated as the new Policy Committee Chair. In addition, the party's spokespersons will be Park Sunghoon and Choi Sujin, and Park Sumin, the chief of staff to the floor leader, will also serve as chief of staff to the Emergency Response Committee Chair.
