BMW leads imported car sales, but Tesla Model Y tops individual model rankings
Three-way competition intensifies among BMW, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz
Market growth driven by diverse models and stable supply
BMW became the top imported car brand in the first half of this year, selling approximately 38,000 units. However, the best-selling car during the same period was Tesla's Model Y. While BMW increased its market share by offering a diverse range of models, Tesla's growth was driven primarily by sales of specific models.
According to data on new registrations of imported passenger vehicles for June this year analyzed by the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) on July 3, BMW sold 38,280 units in the first half of the year, securing the number one spot in imported car market share at 27.7%.
Mercedes-Benz followed with 32,575 units sold (23.5%), while Tesla recorded sales of 19,212 units, accounting for a 14% market share.
By model, Tesla's Model Y became the best-selling vehicle with 10,724 units sold. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class ranked second with 13,428 units, followed by the BMW 5 Series with 11,958 units.
On a monthly basis for June, BMW narrowly outpaced Tesla by selling 6,553 units compared to Tesla's 6,377 units. Mercedes-Benz came in third with 6,037 units, establishing a three-way competition among BMW, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz.
Jung Yoonyoung, Vice Chairman of KAIDA, explained, "New registrations of imported passenger vehicles in June showed mixed results by brand and saw a slight decline compared to the previous month. However, the first half of the year saw growth compared to last year, thanks to a variety of new models and stable supply."
