Joining Furyk, Snedeker, Kisner, and Simpson as Assistant Captain

Gary Woodland, known as a symbol of triumph over adversity, will participate as an assistant captain for the U.S. team in the Ryder Cup, the golf competition between the United States and Europe, scheduled for September.

On July 2 (local time), U.S. team captain Keegan Bradley announced, "I have appointed Woodland as an assistant captain." With this appointment, the U.S. team now has five assistant captains: Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, and Gary Woodland. The U.S. team does not plan to appoint any additional assistant captains. Woodland is expected to be the last assistant captain to join the U.S. team for this Ryder Cup.
Woodland has won four times on the PGA Tour, including the 2019 U.S. Open. In 2023, he underwent major brain surgery to remove a lesion, which involved drilling a hole the size of a baseball in his skull. Despite this significant surgery, Woodland returned to the tour last year and performed at a top level, earning the Courage Award, which is voted on by fellow players.
Bradley expressed his expectations, stating, "If you have won a major championship and still possess top-level skills, you know exactly what is needed for a major event like the Ryder Cup," and added, "He will be an excellent leader at this Ryder Cup." The Ryder Cup is held every two years, alternating between the United States and Europe. This year, it will take place over three days from September 26 at the Black Course of Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York.
