DB Insurance Secures Exclusive Usage Rights for Dog Bite Incident Coverage in Pet Insurance for the First Time

9-Month Exclusive Usage Right
Coverage for Behavior Correction Training Fees
in the Event of Dog Bite Incidents

DB Insurance announced on July 3 that it has obtained a nine-month exclusive usage right from the General Insurance Association of Korea for its “Dog Bite Incident Behavior Correction Training Fee Coverage,” the first of its kind in the industry.

DB Insurance launched this product on May 21. For the next nine months, other insurance companies will be restricted from developing or selling similar riders.

This coverage marks the first case in the pet insurance sector to be granted a nine-month exclusive usage right. Compared to most new pet insurance coverages, which typically receive exclusive rights for only three to six months, this is considered a high evaluation.

DB Insurance’s new coverage provides liability compensation if a person is diagnosed for more than two weeks due to injuries caused by a dog bite incident involving a companion animal. Additionally, if the problematic behavior of the pet is corrected, the policy reimburses the actual cost of the training. This is the first case where the coverage scope has been expanded beyond medical expenses to include accident prevention and behavior correction.

Behavior correction training is reimbursed for up to 10 sessions per incident, with a maximum of 150,000 KRW per session, for training expenses regularly incurred over a certain period by nationally certified animal care providers to correct problematic behaviors (aggression) related to dog bite incidents.

Regardless of the type of training, the policy supports the method chosen by the customer, whether it is one-on-one lessons, group classes, home visits, or boarding education.

The pet insurance market has mainly focused on covering treatment costs after a diagnosis of illness or injury. As a result, it has not fully addressed the diverse needs of pet owners.

To address these limitations, DB Insurance has been consistently developing products that include not only simple medical expense coverage but also management of abnormal behaviors and protection for pet owners.

In January, DB Insurance introduced a rider that covers pet boarding fees incurred when a pet owner is hospitalized and requires outpatient visits to a tertiary hospital, with differentiated coverage amounts based on the pet’s weight to enhance effectiveness. In April, the company expanded liability coverage by introducing a rider that covers fines in the event of criminal penalties due to a dog bite incident. In May, it further broadened its coverage by launching a benefit for behavior correction training fees aimed at correcting abnormal behaviors.

A DB Insurance representative stated, “We expect to help reduce the burden of pet care for owners by providing a practical solution through support for dog training,” and added, “We will continue to strive to develop practical coverage that reflects the needs of the market and pet owners.”
