On-site Inspection of Urban Flood Prevention Projects and Stormwater Inlet Maintenance
On July 2, the Chungnam Provincial Government conducted an on-site inspection of areas in Hongseong County that are vulnerable to flooding, as part of its efforts to prepare for heavy summer rainfall.
The inspection team, including Shin Dongheon, Director General of Autonomy and Safety for the province, and Seo Gyeweon, Director of Administration and Welfare for Hongseong County, visited sites such as the urban flood prevention project near Hongseong Intercity Bus Terminal and the maintenance site for stormwater inlets in Namjang-ri, Hongseong-eup, to review the progress of these initiatives.
The area surrounding the intercity bus terminal experienced flooding of 10 commercial buildings and other low-lying areas during heavy rainfall from August 31 to September 1, 2021.
At that time, it was determined that insufficient stormwater drainage capacity and poor internal drainage made it impossible for surface water to be naturally discharged, resulting in flooding.
In response, the provincial government and Hongseong County are currently working on installing one rainwater pumping station and upgrading pipelines (L=3.31 km) across a 0.49 km² area in Goam-ri and Daegyo-ri, which have been designated as priority management zones for sewer maintenance around the terminal.
At the site, Shin Dongheon requested special management measures to prevent flooding, including the forward deployment of flood control equipment, until the project is completed.
In Namjang-ri, he called for the prompt completion of drainage facility maintenance, such as cleaning stormwater inlets and dredging stormwater pipelines, to prevent urban flooding and minimize damage.
Shin Dongheon emphasized, "This year, we will make every effort to prevent recurrence of damage and ensure no casualties by conducting thorough inspections and maintenance, and by implementing swift control and evacuation measures."
