Selected by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries...
First Nationally Designated Tidal Flat Ecological Village in Korea
The nation's first nationally designated 'tidal flat ecological village' will be established in Seosan City, Chungnam Province.
On July 2, the provincial government announced that Jungwang and Wangsan fishing villages, located in Garorim Bay in Seosan City, have been selected for the tidal flat ecological village project organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and will receive up to 868 million won in support over three years.
This project aims to promote the sustainable development of villages within marine (wetland) protected areas that possess outstanding tidal flat ecosystems and beautiful landscapes. Two villages have been designated: the two fishing villages in Chungnam Province and Dueori fishing village in Gochang, North Jeolla Province.
Once designated as a tidal flat ecological village, the village becomes eligible to apply for the 'Tidal Flat Ecological Village Development Project' the following year. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will provide support for securing and improving tourism facilities, funding for environmental conservation activities, strengthening village capacity, and customized allowances for tidal flat ecological interpreters.
Cho Jinbae, Director of the Provincial Marine Policy Division, said, "We expect that the tidal flat ecological village will make a significant contribution to the conservation of tidal flat ecosystems and the revitalization of the local economy," and added, "We will continue to identify more fishing villages in the province so they can be designated as tidal flat ecological villages in the future."
