Jeonnam Province held a kickoff briefing for a research project aimed at fostering the Kim industry as a key national strategic industry at the provincial government office on July 1.
The purpose of the research project is to secure the feasibility of developing the Kim industry into a national strategic industry, with the goals of globalizing Jeonnam Kim and securing a foothold in the global market. It also aims to establish a systematic and concrete implementation strategy for the K-GIM industry cluster.
The main topics include: ▲analyzing the economic value and growth potential of the Kim industry; ▲reviewing the feasibility of fostering it as a national strategic industry and policy support measures; ▲exploring ways to apply blue food tech for sustainable growth; ▲developing customized strategies for the globalization of Kim; and ▲establishing a blueprint for building a blue food tech cluster for the Jeonnam Kim industry.
Jeonnam produces 80% of the nation's Kim, making it the undisputed center of domestic Kim aquaculture. Accordingly, the province plans to establish the K-GIM national strategic industry cluster through the creation of the Kim Industry Promotion Institute, a K-GIM international export complex, an international dried Kim trading platform, and joint logistics centers at overseas consumption hubs.
Previously, to address a 40-year aspiration of Kim aquaculture fishermen, Jeonnam Province invested 1.1 billion won in 2022 to successfully develop a new Kim activation treatment product with superior efficacy compared to existing products on the market, and completed field verification over two years.
Park Youngchae, Director of Oceans and Fisheries for Jeonnam Province, stated, "Jeonnam Kim has captivated palates around the world and has rapidly emerged as a leading representative of K-food," adding, "Through this research project, we will do our utmost to ensure that Korea's Kim industry grows into a larger and more robust sector."
