Special Investigation Team Reiterates 9 a.m. Appearance Notice
Considers Possibility of Arrest Warrant
Delivers Summons Including Additional Foreign Exchange Charges
The special investigation team on insurrection, led by Cho Eunseok, has rejected a request from former President Yoon Sukyeol's side to delay his scheduled appearance by one hour on July 5.
On July 1, the special investigation team announced, "We have decided not to accept former President Yoon's request to adjust the appearance time," adding, "Taking into account the general start of business hours, the progress of previous investigations, and the large volume of matters to be investigated, we have once again notified him to appear at 9 a.m. on July 5."
The special investigation team considered former President Yoon's absence from the second summons for questioning as a refusal to comply with the investigation, and has notified him to appear by 9 a.m. on July 5. They warned that if he fails to comply, they may consider compulsory measures, effectively issuing a 'final ultimatum.'
Former President Yoon's side requested that the appearance time on July 5 be postponed to 10 a.m., on the premise that he would appear, but the special investigation team did not accept this request.
Given that former President Yoon has expressed his intention to comply with the face-to-face investigation and considering the possibility that an arrest warrant could be requested, there is an expectation that he will appear at the scheduled time.
On this day, former President Yoon's side requested a formal written summons from the special investigation team specifying the charges. They argued that, in order to guarantee the right to defense, the investigation schedule should be communicated through a written summons that clearly states the charges under investigation.
In response, it is reported that the special investigation team delivered a summons to former President Yoon's side that added foreign exchange-related charges to the investigation targets.
If former President Yoon appears as scheduled on July 5, the special investigation team plans to verify allegations that he attempted to justify the proclamation of martial law by sending drones to provoke armed conflict or by creating tensions between North and South Korea.
