The Korea Automobile Mobility Safety Society announced that it participated in the International Working Group (IWG) to discuss safety standards for future vehicles at the UN ECE Vehicle Regulations General Assembly (WP.29) held in Geneva, Switzerland, for three days starting on the 25th of last month.
The UN ECE WP.29 is an international consultative body that discusses safety and environmental standards related to automobiles. As the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-based autonomous vehicle technology is progressing in earnest, the need to discuss and coordinate related safety standards at the level of international organizations has increased. Accordingly, this consultative body exchanges various opinions regarding the international harmonization of related standards and the leadership in global standardization.
The Korea Automobile Mobility Safety Society attended this General Assembly and discussed cooperation measures with experts from major countries such as the United States, France, and Germany. According to the Society, it communicated with Catherine Evans, Professor at Sorbonne University in France, who plays a key role in the working group channel for future vehicle and AI-related regulatory experts, and agreed that the Korea Automobile Mobility Safety Society would participate from the Korean side going forward.

In addition, the Society visited the Technical University of Munich in Germany and discussed ways to standardize human-centered safety standards for autonomous vehicles with Professor Klaus Bengler, a renowned scholar in the field of ergonomics. They exchanged views on driver state monitoring standards for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Level 3?4, as well as emotion and concentration analysis based on in-vehicle cameras, and the evaluation of driving habits using digital twin technology.
Donghoon Shin, Professor at Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Academic Vice President of the Society, introduced AI-based driver state prediction technology, research collaboration cases with Hyundai Motor Company, and plans for international joint research with Purdue University at a seminar for researchers at the Technical University of Munich. The Society decided to appoint Professor Bengler as an overseas expert advisory member of the Safety Standards and International Harmonization Division, which was established this year.
Ha Sungyong, President of the Society, stated, "Professor Bengler's research philosophy aligns with our Society's vision that autonomous driving technology should evolve in a human-centered way," and added, "Based on international cooperation at the UN meeting in Geneva, we will lead the global standardization of AI and future vehicle safety standards together with European expert groups."
