Gyeonggi Province is strengthening 'climate disaster response education' for its residents.
On July 1, Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced that, in order to proactively address the severity of disasters caused by the climate crisis, it will launch environmental education activities focused on climate disaster response from August to November. The province will accept applications from organizations wishing to participate until 6 p.m. on July 25.
This initiative was planned to help residents develop the capacity to prepare for and respond to everyday risks, as the frequency and intensity of climate disasters such as heat waves, cold waves, wildfires, and heavy rainfall are increasing due to climate change.
In particular, the province will collaborate with local nonprofit organizations and specialized environmental education institutions to provide effective, customized environmental education programs.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and corporations registered in Gyeonggi Province, as well as social environmental education institutions and basic environmental education centers designated under the Act on the Promotion and Support of Environmental Education. Cha Seongsu, Director of the Climate, Environment and Energy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Climate disasters are no longer an issue limited to specific groups or regions, but a reality faced by all residents. Raising awareness of risks through education and empowering people to protect themselves is the most effective response," adding, "We hope this initiative will serve as a catalyst for realizing the social value of environmental education and building a Gyeonggi Province that is resilient to the climate crisis."
