Chonnam National University Hospital announced on the 30th that it recently held the 23rd Gwangju International Interventional Cardiology Symposium (Gwangju International Interventional Cardiology Symposium, hereafter GICS) at the Gwangju Kim Daejung Convention Center.
The 23rd GICS was attended by approximately 400 cardiology scholars from more than 20 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, China, and Taiwan, who discussed a variety of topics related to cardiovascular diseases. Domestically, a total of about 2,200 participants involved in cardiology?including professors, specialists, residents, nurses, and medical technologists from university hospitals, general hospitals, and clinics?attended the event.
Organized by the Cardiovascular Center of Chonnam National University Hospital, GICS has been held annually in Gwangju since 2003. It is one of the largest international academic conferences in Korea, where domestic and international cardiology experts share the latest knowledge and discuss future research through lectures and case presentations.
At this academic conference, Chonnam National University Hospital, along with Seoul National University Hospital, Korea University Anam Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital in the United States, presented live and video-recorded demonstrations of cardiac interventions, including percutaneous coronary intervention and transcatheter aortic valve replacement. At this year's GICS, the team of Professors Ahn Youngkeun and Hong Youngjoon from the Department of Cardiology at Chonnam National University Hospital successfully demonstrated coronary intravascular lithotripsy?a procedure scheduled to be introduced in Korea?for a patient with severely calcified coronary artery disease, further raising the hospital's profile.
Professor Ahn Youngkeun, who has been leading GICS since last year, stated, "The Cardiovascular Center at Chonnam National University Hospital performs about 2,000 cardiac interventions each year with a 99% success rate. Through this year's GICS, which marks its 23rd anniversary, we have once again confirmed the strength of our Department of Cardiology." He added, "GICS not only provides the best medical services to patients with heart disease by sharing the latest medical technologies and advancing cardiology research through domestic and international networks, but it also makes a significant contribution to balanced regional development."
