On June 30, President Lee Jae Myung held his first phone call since taking office with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Kang Yoo Jung, spokesperson for the presidential office, revealed the call between the two leaders in a written briefing on the same day, stating, "Prime Minister Wong once again extended his warm congratulations and expressed his expectations for the development of Korea-Singapore relations and his willingness to cooperate during President Lee's term."
According to Spokesperson Kang, President Lee said, "I am pleased that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975, our two countries have achieved remarkable results in cooperation across all fields, including politics and security, economy, society and culture, as well as regional and international issues."
Spokesperson Kang also reported that the two leaders agreed to establish a strategic partnership this year to mark the 50th anniversary of Korea-Singapore diplomatic relations, and to accelerate strategic cooperation in a wide range of areas, including peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, artificial intelligence (AI), digital sectors, and other future growth industries.
Meanwhile, President Lee expressed his hope that Prime Minister Wong would attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju this year. Prime Minister Wong responded by expressing his belief that Korea will successfully host the APEC summit and suggested that the two countries continue to promote active exchanges at the high-level on various occasions.
