Police Determine Mental Health Issues... Emergency Hospitalization Ordered
A woman in her 20s who was wandering naked around an apartment complex in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, was isolated by the police. The police determined that she had mental health issues and took emergency hospitalization measures.
According to the Pyeongtaek Police Station on June 29, a 112 emergency call was received at around 5:35 p.m. on June 27, reporting, "There is a woman walking around naked near an apartment complex in Dogok-dong." The caller reportedly emphasized, "She seems to be mentally unstable," and added, "She is not wearing anything at all."
The police immediately dispatched to the scene found a woman in her 20s, identified as Ms. A, sitting in her own car without wearing any clothes, including underwear, and apprehended her. The police investigation revealed that Ms. A had been walking around naked for a certain period, exhibiting abnormal behavior such as rambling incoherently or shouting. However, no harm to people or property was reported as a result of her actions. At the time, it had not yet been confirmed whether Ms. A was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The police determined that Ms. A's mental state was unstable and that there was a high risk of self-harm or harm to others. Accordingly, they took "emergency hospitalization measures" under Article 50 of the Mental Health Welfare Act, which allows for involuntary admission to a medical institution. This measure can last up to three days (excluding holidays) and may be extended based on a specialist's assessment. The police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
