Ranked First as the Executive Most Desired to Work With at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy
On June 29, President Lee Jaemyung appointed Lee Hoyoun, Director General for Energy Policy, as the Second Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Recognized as a practical energy expert, Vice Minister Lee is considered the right person to oversee the ministry's energy policies, including the expansion of renewable energy, nuclear power exports, and overseas resource development.
Born in Yanggu, Gangwon Province, the new vice minister graduated from Gangwon High School and the Department of Economics at Yonsei University. He entered public service after passing the 39th Higher Civil Service Examination. At the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, he gained extensive experience in key energy policies, serving as Director of Trade Policy, Director General for Energy Innovation Policy, and Director General for Power Innovation Policy. He also served as Director General for Win-Win Cooperation Policy at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and as an administrator at the Office of Policy Coordination at the Presidential Office.
In particular, during his tenure as Director General for Energy Policy, he led major initiatives such as promoting the commercialization of next-generation solar cells, reviewing the East Sea deep-sea gas field, and inspecting the Alaska LNG project site. Within the organization, he has been recognized for his strong drive and communication skills, ranking first as the executive most wanted to work with.
Going forward, the new vice minister is expected to lead the ministry's overall energy and resource policies, including adjusting the energy mix, expanding the supply of new and renewable energy, securing strategic minerals, and fostering the hydrogen industry ecosystem. He is also anticipated to play a leading role in establishing the direction of next-generation energy policies in line with the government's "Energy Expressway" pledge.
