Doosan Fuel Cell and Korea Western Power Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Utilizing Biogas

Doosan Fuel Cell announced on June 29 that it has developed a hydrogen fuel cell model utilizing biogas in collaboration with Korea Western Power.

Doosan Fuel Cell and Korea Western Power Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Utilizing Biogas

This model, which has been jointly developed with Korea Western Power since 2021, generates power using hydrogen fuel cells fueled by biogas from sources such as domestic sewage and manure. Specifically, it operates by either directly injecting biogas into the hydrogen fuel cell or by mixing biogas with natural gas and other fuels.

The phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) developed by Doosan Fuel Cell can utilize a variety of energy sources, including a hydrogen model that directly uses hydrogen, an NG model that uses natural gas, and a dual model that uses both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas.

In addition, the company plans to begin mass production of its new product, the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), in the second half of this year.

The government enacted the 'Act on the Promotion of Production and Utilization of Biogas Using Organic Waste Resources' in 2023, and the Ministry of Environment has announced plans to expand annual biogas production to 500 million N㎥ by 2026. A Doosan Fuel Cell representative stated, "We will further advance our fuel reforming technology so that hydrogen fuel cell power generation becomes possible with any energy source capable of extracting hydrogen."
