Suspect Hits Two Residents While Fleeing
Arrest Warrant Issued Due to "Risk of Flight"
A man in his 20s has been arrested after killing a taxi driver in his 60s in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle.
Hwaseong Western Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 28th that they had arrested a 21-year-old man, identified as A, on charges of robbery-murder and attempted murder. The Suwon District Court issued an arrest warrant during the warrant review held on the same day, citing concerns that the suspect might flee.
A is accused of stabbing taxi driver B, who was in his 60s, with a weapon on a road in Bibong-myeon, Hwaseong, at around 3:27 a.m. on the 26th, then stealing the taxi and fleeing. B was transported to a hospital but died.
During his escape, A also allegedly struck two local residents with the vehicle, causing one to suffer a fracture and the other a contusion. About an hour after the crime, at around 4:40 a.m., A was apprehended by police officers from the Namtaeryeong Police Substation in Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
When three weapons were found among his belongings, A stated that he was carrying them for self-defense. He was not intoxicated at the time of his arrest, and a rapid drug test returned negative. Police are also investigating whether he has a history of mental illness treatment.
Police believe A committed the crime after getting into a dispute with the driver, who was unable to find the destination.
