Fares for Teenagers, Children, and Early Bird Discounts Also Raised Simultaneously
Second Phase of 2023 Fare Hike Plan Completed
Starting June 28, the base fare for subway rides in the Seoul metropolitan area?including Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province?has increased by 150 won to 1,550 won. This is a follow-up measure to the second phase of fare hikes announced last year, and all three local governments in the metropolitan area, including Seoul, began implementing the increase simultaneously on this day.
On June 28, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that from the first train of the day, the base fare for the Seoul subway and metropolitan lines (operated by Korail, Incheon Urban Railway, and Gyeonggi lines) has been raised by 150 won. For adults using a transportation card, the fare has increased from 1,400 won to 1,550 won. For teenagers, the fare has risen from 800 won to 900 won, and for children, it has been adjusted from 500 won to 550 won.
For those paying with cash, the fare for adults is now 1,650 won, for teenagers 1,650 won, and for children 550 won, respectively.
The early bird discount fare has also been raised. For rides taken with a transportation card from the first train until 6:30 a.m. on weekdays, the discounted fare for adults has increased from 1,120 won to 1,240 won. For teenagers, it has gone up from 640 won to 720 won, and for children, from 400 won to 440 won.
In 2023, the Seoul Metropolitan Government decided to increase fares by 150 won twice, for a total increase of 300 won, in order to align fares with operational costs. The first increase was implemented in October of that year. After consultations with Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, the second increase was set to take effect starting today.
A Seoul city official stated, "Considering the ongoing operational deficits, we had no choice but to raise the fares," and added, "We will continue to ensure stable subway operations without compromising the convenience of citizens."
